Double your chances for awe with this immersive two-part adventure that combines whale watching on the water with a guided bear and wildlife search on land.
Your journey begins with a whale-watching cruise from Icy Strait Point, heading toward the nutrient-rich waters of Point Adolphus, renowned for its abundance of humpback whales and other marine life. After returning to shore, you’ll continue by bus through the Tlingit village of Hoonah and into the untamed heart of Chichagof Island, home to one of the highest concentrations of coastal brown bears in the world.
As you travel through the lush rainforest and open muskegs of the Spasski River Valley, your guide will point out bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, and the elusive brown bears that roam freely in this remote habitat. Once in the valley, you’ll disembark for a gentle nature walk along gravel paths and boardwalks, leading to viewing platforms perched over an active salmon stream. Along the way, your guide will interpret the unique rainforest ecology and highlight the flora and fauna that sustain this wild ecosystem.
This is real wilderness, unpredictable and unscripted. While bear sightings are common in summer, they cannot be guaranteed. Dress warmly, wear water-resistant walking shoes, and bring a rain jacket or layers to stay comfortable in Southeast Alaska’s ever-changing weather. And don’t forget your camera and binoculars.
